The Do’s and Don’ts With Pets

The Do’s and Don’ts With Pets

Rental Properties that allow pets are not the easiest places to come by. Unfortunately this is because many owners have been put in very undesirable situations by tenants with pets in the past. Ripped up carpet, gaping holes in fly-screens, a “dog smell” that no cleaning product on earth seems to remove…sound familiar?

Here are some rules to consider when looking to rent a property with a pet, or are looking to bring a pet into your current rental property.

  • You must notify the agent or specify in your application that you would like to keep a pet on the property
  • Each and every pet to live at the property must have a completed and signed pet agreement
  • No pets may enter the property without a completed and signed pet agreement i.e. no dog sitting for friends.
  • All pets must remain outside at all times
  • All pets to live at the property must be registered with the local council
  • You must repair or pay for any damage caused by pets at the property
  • You must ensure all pet “waste” is removed from the property promptly
  • You must pay for the property to be professionally cleaned, treated and deodorized upon vacating the property; this includes treatment for pet odours, fleas, ticks, and all other pet parasites

There are some more rules to abide by but keep these basic ones in mind when looking to house pets and you should have no problems. Remember to always communicate your intentions with your property manager in order to keep the relationship open, honest and easy.
